2.1. Overview of Step 2: Read, Listen, View, Share

In Step 2, you first read, listen to, and view articles and videos that present and explain the eight democratic values that we emphasize in Lift Every Voice. Then you are asked to think about which are the most important values? What have been some of the most important values in your own life?

Democratic and Academic Objectives

In this Step 2, the targeted Democratic and Academic Objectives are:

Academic Objectives to Apply in Step 2:

•             Vocabulary: Learn and use academic and content vocabulary related to democratic values
(Step 2.2)

•             Deep Comprehension: Learn to comprehend, analyze, and evaluate texts and videos.
(Step 2.3)

•             Narrative Storytelling: Tell a story about an experience in your life that captures an important value for you. (Step 2.5)

Democratic Competencies to Apply in Step 1:

•             Democratic Values: Learn and apply democratic values to proposing ways to heal and unify
our country. (Steps 2.2)

•              Identity Awareness: Integrate core democratic values into your identity and culture.

 

 

2.2. Democratic Values Vocabulary

2.3. A Deeper Dive Into the Eight Democratic Values

Now to go a little deeper, for each value, we have created a Sway which provides a good way to present these values with  readings, videos, and images. You can also share these Sways with your friends, families, and community members. Click the expand button in the top right corner of each Sway to make them easier to read and view.

2.5. What Is An Experience In Your Life That Captures a Value That Is Important To You?

Think of an experience you have had that captures, reprseents, or symbolizes a value that is important to you. Click on the button below to take you  to Step 2 in your Democratic Values Portfolio where you in turn will go to Flipgrid. Flipgrid provides an easy way to make a video.

2.6. Next Steps

In Steps 1 and 2, the goal is to introduce you to these eight core values and to begin to consider which values are most important to you.

In Step 3, you will analyze and evaluate theses values and other values  that are important to you and to our country.
